Relationships and Sex Education
Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
Statutory and non-statutory teaching.
At Springhallow School we follow the National Curriculum whilst meeting our student’s individual needs by tailoring learning to suit their understanding and learning style. The same applies for teaching Relationship and Sex Education. Your child will be taught based on their level of understanding against the National curriculum and have their individual needs supported through teaching of RSE. Therefore, the below information is not strictly based on the year group of your child. However, where appropriate for your child’s development they may be taught age appropriate topics but in an adapted way to suit their understanding.
Many topics are now statutory on the RSE/Science curriculum. This means that your child is required to receive teaching on these when they are ready to, in age or understanding. However, your child’s teacher will let you know which non-statutory topics they will teach. If you do not want your child to attend these non-statutory lessons, you can let their teacher know that you would like your child to opt out of these lessons via your child’s home/school communication method.
The below tables state all the statutory topics that your child may be taught throughout the key stages in accordance to the National Curriculum (these are mandatory) and it also shows the non-statutory requirements that you may choose for your child not to be taught if the teaching arises/permission is asked.
Secondary (Key Stages 3 and 4)
These tables are the statutory vs non statutory of the National Curriculum, contact your child’s teacher if you would like more information about what is taught within each topic. Please be reminded that you do not need to be notified about teaching of the statutory requirements but should be given the opportunity to opt out of the non-statutory sex education teaching if they plan to cover any of those topics with your child.
